Introduction

In the modern automotive industry, safety is paramount. Vehicle manufacturers and service providers continually strive to enhance the  safety systems in their vehicles, ensuring that drivers and passengers are protected at all times. One crucial aspect of maintaining these safety systems is regular calibration. Our mobile service is dedicated to automatic safety systems calibrations for automotive repair shops to streamline productivity.

What Is ADAS?

With development in technology over the years, modern cars now come equipped with highly evolved ADAS systems. (Advanced driver assistance systems) are filled with a variety of safety features that use an ecosystem of sensors that continuously monitor the surroundings of the vehicle. These sensors pick up crucial information that can trigger safety alerts, and even assume temporary control of the vehicle’s braking or steering as part of better protecting the driver.

On the other hand, the operation of ADAS is highly dependent on the correct calibration of sensors. The system will function accurately and effectively as long as they are properly calibrated. This makes ADAS calibration one of these indispensable services in modern automotive.

How does the ADAS system work?

ADAS integrates software (AI, algorithms, and control modules) with hardware (LiDAR, cameras, radars, and sensors) to enhance vehicle safety. For example, if a driver unintentionally drifts out of their lane, the Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system detects lane markings and alerts them to steer back

    Automatic Emergency Braking

It detects obstacles and applies brakes automatically to prevent collisions.

    Sensors Used: Radar, Camera

    Integration Level: Level 2

    Lane Keeping Assist

Automatically steers the vehicle back into the lane if drifting is detected.

    Sensors Used: Camera, Steering Sensors

    Integration Level: Level 2

    Blind Spot Monitoring

Warns the driver of vehicles in blind spots during lane changes.

    Sensors Used: Radar, Ultrasonic Sensors

    Integration Level: Level 2

    Lane departure warning

Helps you stay in your lane with alerts displayed on the system screen.

    Forward collision warning

The system beeps on identification of object, car or any other substance upon arriving within its safety range.

    Rear cross traffic alert

Helps drivers via audible warning if vehicles or unknown objects are detected while reversing the car.

    Parking Assistance

This system helps drivers with parallel parking, which is an obstacle for many. By using alerts and cameras, you will know if something is near your front or rear bumper.

    Emergency Steering

Sometimes things can surprise a driver by jumping into the middle of the road. Emergency Steering will move into action when this happens so the driver doesn’t hit the obstacle.

    Adaptive Cruise Control

This system keeps your vehicle going with the flow of traffic by matching the speed of the car in front of it.

    (SAE) Levels of Autonomous Driving

ADAS Level 0: No Driving Automation

The first level of autonomous driving established by the SAE involves no vehicle automation at all. The driver’s full engagement is necessary, with features restricted to issuing warnings and offering temporary aid. Blindspot Monitoring and Lane Departure Warning are two examples of ADAS features that can fall underneath Level 0. While these systems can help alert the driver to potential obstacles, they must be consistently supervised in order to maintain safety on the road.

    ADAS Level 1: Driver Assistance

In the early days of autonomous driving, the technology was primarily limited to research labs and experimental vehicles, far from the reach of everyday consumers. Level 1 autonomy marked a significant step forward, introducing driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist. These features offered drivers a taste of what was to come, delivering both convenience and assistance. However, their capabilities were limited, and human supervision remained an essential part of the equation.

    ADAS Level 2: Partial Automation

Vehicles equipped with Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) can manage several driving tasks, including acceleration, braking, and steering, but still require the driver’s vigilance and attention. Level 2 ADAS is distinguished by the way its features can work in unison, allowing for lane centering and adaptive cruise control features to operate simultaneously. This cooperative function is the primary difference between Level 1 and Level 2 ADAS systems. While Level 1 automation provides only one automated control function, Level 2 ADAS includes a significant advancement by integrating multiple automated capabilities to enhance driving safety and efficiency.

    ADAS Level 3: Conditional Automation

Under Level 3 ADAS, vehicles gain the ability to manage most aspects of driving under certain conditions, allowing drivers to disengage from active control. When comparing Level 2 autonomous vehicles to those classified as Level 3 ADAS – control is the subtle, but key difference. Whilst Levels 0 to 2 encompass a range of driver assistance features, they cannot handle tasks independently. At Level 3, self-driving vehicles exhibit the capability to independently handle specific tasks and scenarios, yet they retain the necessity for a human driver to assume control when prompted or when faced with situations beyond the system’s capabilities.

    ADAS Level 4: High Automation

Level 4 ADAS vehicles are designed to handle a wide range of driving tasks without human intervention, but their operation is confined to certain environments or scenarios. These vehicles can navigate city streets, highways, and other designated areas without requiring a human driver to take over. This level of automation represents a significant advancement over Level 3, where the human driver must be ready to intervene when necessary. Companies such as Cruise and Waymo have made significant progress in Level 4 ADAS development, deploying autonomous ride-hailing services and delivery fleets in selected regions.

    ADAS Level 5: Full Automation

ADAS Level 5 remains the ultimate goal of the autonomous driving industry. This autonomous driving level represents full automation, where vehicles can navigate any environment, under any conditions, without human intervention. Although Level 5 ADAS – Full Automation has been defined by the SAE, it’s important to remember that this level of autonomous driving has yet to be achieved. However, with leading automakers like Tesla, BMW, and Toyota working alongside tech companies, it’s clear that the push toward full automation is underway.

    When is calibration required?

The Insurance Industry Requirements and the vehicles manufacturer state under what circumstances these sensors must be calibrated however in most cases this will be:

    • When repairing, removing and refitting, aligning or replacing any ADAS sensors or associated vehicle parts likely to affect the operation and functionality of ADAS sensors.

    • When making any body geometry changes or changes to the vehicle’s wheel alignment, suspension geometry or ride height; for example a shock absorber or coil spring replacement

    • When carrying out any other repair, servicing or maintenance tasks which may affect the function of the ADAS sensors on the vehicle.

    • Windscreen replacement

    • Front or rear collision repair
